Notes · November 2026

Egnyte® in 2026: what changed, and what it means for a mid-sized firm.

This year Egnyte® stopped being only somewhere to keep files. Four releases added AI controls, agents you can build yourself, and a layer that tells those agents how your business fits together. Here is what each one is, in plain terms, and where I would start.

The four releases

March — AI Safeguards and the AI Assistant

Controls over what AI is allowed to see, layered on top of the permissions you already have, plus an assistant built into the platform and the desktop app. The point that matters: the AI works inside your permissions, so nobody can ask their way into a folder they could not open.

August — AI workflows and the Agent Builder

Agents created by describing them in plain language, either from scratch or starting from a marketplace of ready-made ones, and workflows that run approvals and routing off the documents themselves. Governance is built in rather than added afterwards.

September — the Context Layer, and agents for AEC

A map of how your content, people, projects and systems relate, assembled for each task so an agent starts with the right background instead of searching blind. For construction and design firms it came with automatic classification of document types, task-based agents such as a specifications analyst, and a two-way connector with Autodesk Forma.

October — Context Studio and the AI Control Center

Context Studio shows exactly what an agent can draw on and flags what is missing. The AI Control Center gives whoever runs IT one view of every agent connected to company content and what sensitive material each can reach, with the ability to narrow it. Egnyte® reports large reductions in AI processing cost from better context in its own preliminary tests; treat those as vendor figures until you have seen them on your own content.

What it means if you are a 20–200 person firm

  • The structure matters more, not less. Every one of these features works off your folders, permissions and document types. A messy file server moved to Egnyte® gives you confident AI over a mess.
  • Agents are now cheap to start and easy to get wrong. Anyone can describe an agent. Deciding which jobs it should do, what it may see, and who checks its answers is the actual work.
  • Governance has caught up. For the first time there is one place to see which AI tools are touching company content. If staff are already connecting tools on their own, that is worth switching on early.
  • AEC firms get the most out of the box. Specification, submittal and correspondence work is exactly what the new agents are built for.

Where I would start

Fix the folder structure and permissions first. Then switch on the safeguards and the control centre, so you can see what is connected. Then pick one job that eats hours every week and build one agent for it, checked by a person, before building a second.

Already on Egnyte, or thinking about it?

A quick call is enough to tell whether it is a structure problem, a licence problem, or neither.
